Where do I begin with a group like Occasional Detroit? It's so difficult to try and define them because there really is no other band like O-D. Their fusion of experimental rap, funk, electronic beats, noise, and fucked up rock is literally like nothing I've ever head before. The band is also somewhat of an enigma, they disappeared from the Detroit scene around 2006 and moved to Decatur, GA and from the looks of it now (according to their website and various myspace accounts), they're now located and operating out of Albuquerque, NM.

In addition to exploding minds with their unrelenting sonic assault, O-D has a visual art project entitled, Dollface Filmz, which is a natural extension of the music. Basically, it's the visual equivalent of getting stuck in a trap house while your buddy goes to make a deal. It starts out with you waiting on the couch for your buddy to come back, then suddenly some dude appears next to you and offers you a joint laced with PCP. Next thing you know, you've been listening to top 40 hip hop non-stop while rocking back and forth in a corner for 12 hours waiting to come down. To put it bluntly, it's a trip and a half.

Everything O-D touches turns into pure psychedelic gold. Band's are not this expressive anymore, and it's a damn shame, they touch on the gritty reality of life and project it into the astral realm. If this band is too much for you, then I'd just say you're a sheltered pussy who's never struggled a day in your life, and if that's the case then this music is definitely NOT FOR YOU. This is serious expression, and quite frankly some of the best art in any medium that I've been introduced to in quite some time.

Neue Duetsche Welle

This is the second cassette I found at my work labelled "Neue Duetsche Welle." I had originally planned on uploading them both, but lost the first one in a move. It's not too much of a loss though, the first one was kind of bloated with boring pop hits rather than the weird stuff. I think this one may be the superior tape, though I'm a little confused as to why it's labelled as an NDW mix. The first few songs definitely fill the bill, but then the tape veers off into straight-up punk territory, hitting all sorts of different sounds and styles. There's some trashy shit, hardcore, pop-punk, post-punk and even some kbd styled tracks. I have no idea what any of these songs are, except for the Dead Kennedy's California Über Alles (!?). The cassette came from a collection of tapes donated to the library I work at decades ago. Most of the tapes are german language lessons, german comedians, or german classical music. It's all fun stuff to go through and clean up and whatnot but this is some gold right here. Whoever put this together did a great job and taped it all off vinyl so it sounds pretty fantastic. If anybody can give me some info about any of these tracks please hit me up.

update: maggothead totally hooked it up with tracklist. It's still missing a few tracks, but I got most of it filled out and re-upped the download with the updated metadata. PEACE!

Here is a list of things I like:

"Wild Thing" Covers

Jangly guitars with over-done out of tune vocals

Now fall to the floor and weep as all of these are combined into one. I am not shitting you, the very first track is a Wild Thing cover where the singer screams "WILDFANG!" instead of "Wild Thing!" Overall it's filled with summertime roofjams, somewhat akin to early gulcher stuff, though more sincere and less raunchy. Instead of being about ladies and doing things to them, you get songs about wanting to be a drummer, like Ringo! I think i read somewhere the band was from Brooklyn, probably some puerto rican neighborhood because there's for sure some latin vibes, even a straight-up latin-beat song called Rico-A-Mundo. Oh lordy I just noticed that once of the band's thousand names is "The Unemployed Ricans." This is a total summer grower.

This here's for anyone who always the the treble knob turned up all the way on their stereo. 18 cuts of detroit soul that sound lke they found the master tapes in a soggy tin can. As I write this my entire day off is being pissed away because of a downpour. Whatever, I'll just stay inside and think about how babysitting sucks. There's a nice variety of northern soul, deep soul, and soem doo-woppy stuff. Fun for the whole family or at least a house full of gangly white kids. The guitar break on Sick Spell kills me every time. The tone is pefect, it's almost as if you're hearing it form the apartment next-door, with your head leaning up against the wail. Nice HQ vinyl rips from me and stuff. Hope you like it, if not fuck you.

"Actually, we ended up doing different kinds of costumes from the stuff we dug out from the trash cans. We found two large elementary school clocks and we made boxes for them. And you can actually move the pointers from inside the box! My box has a picture of a toothbrushing parrot and Tero has a lake theme. We'll stay inside the boxes for 15 minutes and play 3 parallel recordings of a waterfall at huge volume and then come out of the boxes dressed in sleeping bags and making stupid noises to microphones. And when we get out from the sleeping bags we have funny costumes. Will be a dark and sweaty gig."

Familiar sounds for anyone interested in Finnish freakouts. This here's an LP reissue of a long-oop cassette. The sound is relentless. Fuzzed out and bangin the whole way through. This one's for Fraham.

New Colony Six - Breakthrough

I heard a story somewhere that New Colony Six and Paul Revere & The Raiders shared a duplex in LA without knowing it. Both bands, New Colony Six from Chicago and the Raiders from Boise, were in LA trying to "make it" and spent at least a few weeks living in the duplex together without realizing it. One day when one band was leaving for a show and the other was coming back from a show they ran into each other and realized they were both wearing colonial costumes and things got super weird. The details get a bit hazy here but the singer of NCS claims they ended up changing their outfits once The Raiders started to get huge so t wouldn't seem like they were aping The Raiders' image. Personally, I think New Colony Six looks way better in their goofy costumes, especially in the video of them on Kiddie A Go Go.

They sound is moody and harmony-thick garage. There's a range of energy, but the general atmosphere is soulful and reverb-laden. "At The Rivers Edge" was comped on the nuggets box set, and while it's a great song (who doesn't love upbeat harmonica-laden tracks about suicide) it's not really indicative of the rest of the album. Most of the tracks are mid-tempo lovey-dovey songs which bring that sort of melancholy teeny emotional pulp that I love so much. What's cool is that they bring the heat with tons of slightly weird section changes. Plus, they end it with a "live" track with fake crowd sounds that are more similar to a jet plane taking off in a reverb tank than a real crowd. Ok enjoy

I have trouble accepting the changing of seasons. I don't want to admit that this may be out of some stubborn refusal to accept change, it must be something else. I'd rather blame it on the fact that I spend a great deal of time in windowless rooms and have all but completely lost any concept of time. Last week before going out to party I asked if it was cold out. Auchie said "It's January in Michigan. What do you think?" Check mate. Even so, it didn't dawn on me that winter is here and the effects it's having on my brain and body are staring me right in face. Everybody seems weirder than usual. Thinking twice before I say something, thinking a million time about everything I've said. These aren't things I do when it's not winter.

The Ghetto Brothers were a Puerto Rican gang active in Bronx the 60's and 70's. However, as far as I can tell the Brothers were pretty much your stereotypical "good guy" gang. All the literature I can find about them talks about keeping drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes out of their neighborhoods, NOT seeking revenge for the killing of their buddies, staging parties and jam-sessions, and being super righteous dudes. They had a band too, and that band played the most good-vibe sun-drenched latin-funk party music I've ever heard. In an interview a former member and organizer the dude says

We used to go to Crotona Pool. And you have the 8 ft. section so we would go there periodically to see who was the victim. A gang would kill somebody and throw them in the pool. Everybody would be like, 'Ooooooh! I wonder who's that?'

Here I am sulking about the chilly weather while these dudes were living stone-cold real-talk lives while managing to pump out the sunniest jams of all. Seriously, "You Say You Are My Friend" is giving me the fuzzies all over. Plus, as things get more latin the knob labeled "ALL THE REVERB" gets cranked up. I'm going to pretend it's summer and go drink thirty stone on the roof with this just FUCKING BLASTING

Two days ago I found the best record store ever. I try and hit up every store in Seattle while I visit my family for the Holidays because I can feel good about spending money on vacation. So I stumbled upon this place called Leary Records, which took over another store's spot recently. I seriously wanted to buy everything there. No crap, just yes yes yes. I picked up a copy of The Legendary Stardust Cowboy LP and drove off with my family because everyone was sick of waiting around for me. I went back today with way more money and way more time. It's the perfect place. Just weird enough to keep my on my toes. I actually had to shit off my cell phone because the audiophile boutique downstairs was demoing something and my phone call was ruining everything. Alright whatever I gave the dude a Fuck Dorian and he gave me a cd-r of his band, Forrest Friends. He kept telling me about how their cassette is waaaaay better but I'm actually glad to have the cd because I can listen to that at my parents place.

It makes me think of Avarus, though less dense. There's a party track or two, but mostly meditative stuff. It makes sense, I've been going on hikes over here and it's nice.

The sound is completely unreal. There is nothing else like this. A searing-hot fireball of molten lysergia committed to rotten magnetyks. It's that stupid story they tell you about the hippy child who took too much LSD and stared at the sun. Such a good a idea. The image is so beautiful, who could possibly look away? His eyes are burnt to an ecstatic crisp, they fall out of his head *plop* right into the ocean of deep-red shag carpet. Only this time it's true. You can actually HEAR the hydrogen atoms fusing every time waves of moiré feedback consume all in that lies in their path.

Joe would play this in his car but that car died. Davison & Livernois, not a fun place to be as the sun is setting on devil's night. Not the WORST place to be of course, but one guy in particular caught on to our predicament and tried his best take advantage despite his obvious disadvantages.

Now that the car is gone, it's spirit must live on through 4 mp3s ripped off Joe's music device, because I couldn't find them anywhere else. The first track is mythical. It appears on The Flightless Bird CD, but the sound on this LP offers that sort of "turned the amp up to 11, the knob broke, plugged into a jet-engine instead" that you only really get to hear a few times before you go deaf. And you better believe there's a version of Night of The Assassin that'll leave you begging Wakabayashi to hijack your heart.

This LP and Pärson Sound. On repeat (could you even tell?) for the rest of my life.

This cat has a serious fucking tone. Like a vibrating fingernail to the sweet chunky blue-tinted part of your brain. These recordings bring it too. Nothing but stripped-down poorly-lit Chicago blues here. Holy shit this rhythm section is primitive and well, it's pretty much ALL rhythm section. The first cut on the B side features a Shakey Jake Magic Sam vocal duet that rubs the tape straight into some rust-belt gravel.

Liner notes say it's a collection of 45s.

Not too long ago a lucked out and saw that Daniel Emmanuel himself was selling a lot of cassettes on ebay. As a true believer of Wizards, I really couldn't stop myself. Plus the ebay description of the Rain Forest Music tape suggested turning on and off Dolby noise Reduction to lower or raise the rain forest and water sounds. Yes. Duh.

There's not too much info about these specific tapes, besides Wizards of course. Originally released in 1982 and reissued on vinyl a few times. It's one of those tapes I can count on chilling me the fuck out when I want to pull teeth. Works every time.

Ancient Minimal Meditations is a little more intense than Wizards, but cut from the same cloth. Truly chilled synths. Deep-listening zones. Rain Fores Music slightly deviates in style, but has some fantastic waves of sound and even some guitar tracks. I'm trying to be as succinct as possible because these tapes really speak for themselves.

If you dig on these tapes make sure you try and purchase them if you get the chance. Daniel Emmanuel has an ebay shop and still making music in Texas, though I don't know how often he makes his recordings available.

~*~.~*sTuNnInG*~.~*~ collections of field recordings taken in the early Sixties by British Anthropologists. Ranges from playful singing and flutes to haunted deep-listening to straight up party shit.

Each side of each disc represents a different location, so yeah lots of range here. Even some recordings from missions to throw a spoke in the vibes. Basically: big huge collection. Big booming waterfalls drowning out lone singers. Maybe my favorite part is that Mr. Anthropologist here stored his tapes "Tail In" leading to tape bleed, which turns some of the more spooky solo passages into phantasmal call and response songs.

Disc 3 might be my favorite, loving the pan-pipe melodies. Some real heavy stuff happening on these cuts.

thought i should post some flying nun shit on here... if you want to dig i recommend THE DOLEDRUMS, where you can get a lot of obscure flying nun but might run into some walls, as many of the links no longer work and nothing's been posted for a year.

but anyway, as morgan pointed out, this is a really fucking spooky time of the year. i got all these stray cats hanging around, you see, and one of of them has these huge sunken eyes and a protruding chin. like the pink panther. when i feed the cats, pink panther will hide in the bushes until no humans are around, then will jump onto the porch and force the food down without chewing. real feral shit.

tall dwarfs have formula for pop music in their jaws, but they never seem to chew it. the same repeater keyboard melodies that drove the clean/verlaines/sneaky feelings emerge but never solidify. Wild chanting hooks are perverted while the band mercilessly fuck up the songs. Everything is done by Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate mailing overdubs to each other, which further disconnects the instruments. It's weird for a flying nun band to sound like sun city girls or eddy detroit! snag this! The comp includes two EPS: 1985's "That's the Long and Short of it" and 1986's "Throw a Sickle".

Truly punishing spanish Industrial/Noise group. This was posted on Alice Rabbit's kickass beelog not too long ago, but look I went and split the tracks up for easy jamming/mix-tapin. I managed to grip that before it disappeared, but thanks to a massive hard drive failure it is no more (that's also the reason updates have been sparse on my side. sorry yall).

Some time in the winter I played a show with those dudes from Math Balance Volumes and Natalie Wiseblood. We had a "totally rad time" and everyone got awesome everywhere. When the night was closing down and we got to trading cds and tapes one of the homeboys from MBV pulls out a CD-R and starts talking about some super-rare mid-west garage comp he found at the salvation army. HOLY SHIT. I'd been looking for this comp for fucking ever. Nowhere to be found, and homie picks it up at a second hand store. Well I guess he sold it for a few hundo (can't really blame him....maybe i can i dunno) but not before digitizing that shit and giving a copy to little ole' me.

This comp is insane. There are some LEGENDARY bands on this comp, and it's from goddamn 1967. I'll admit there are a few not-super-essential cuts on here, but there are some truly wrecked psyched-out jammers on here that bring it way over the top. This guy right here is a true historical relic.

Elmer Wright is an alright dude. Raymond "HJ" Wojtowicz came across this tape in some salvation army somewhere and put it on while driving my hung-over ass to some nasty breakfast zone. Mr. Wright possesses a special kind of hatred towards christmas, one that could only be harbored by a man that loves the lord jesus christ more than anything else in the world. He preaches his gospel through aggressively repetitive country tunes that wow and flutter sluggishly from florida heatwaves. His downer vibes and monotone interludes really drive home that "drowning in the vibes" feeling that only a big crusty resin hit can truly mimic.

FUCK OFF! tampax is even goofier, with awesome hiiiiigh frequency waves blaring over everything sometimes. the singer sounds like he's about to pass out the whole time and makes a fart noise at the end

Metal Babble - Four Winters

When I began recording under the Metal Babble moniker, the name was just a silly video game reference for what I expected to be a one-off noise project. Over the past five years, it's become much more than that. With zero funding and mostly borrowed equipment, I've come up with a pretty sizeable amount of material. Most of which was recorded in the winter months in bouts of reclusion and depression. Since then, I've had a lot of personal growth and gained a much better outlook. I no longer wish to make moody music to vent my frustrations. I'd much rather find solutions to my problems and share them with others. I hope to inspire people to live differently. To take time to appreciate life and the world around them. I intend for my future music endeavors to be a vehicle for this message. While this music represents feelings that are behind me, I am still proud of it. The name for this project now reveals it's true meaning: Defeating a Metal Babble is difficult, but in doing so, much experience is gained. Consider this a victory.

This album is composed of what I consider my strongest work. Four EPs expressing heartache, alienation, bleakness and isolation.

Tuesday Morning Struggzzzz

this Tuesday I woke up covered in sweat and realized that my body will never be what it once was: a shining beacon of light, drawing in wounded sailors for miles to come. Once I finally showed up to the trotter house I was mystified by the physical condition of all these high school students. To be completely serious, these jams were made by a bunch of kids with varying levels of learning disabilities and autism under the direction of Joseph Wojtowicz and Johnny "j-bird" Farris. I have never before felt such beautiful vibes and raw emotiions expressed through music. I was brought to tears. The drumming on the second track melted my brain into a puddle of sunshine and butterflies. The vocals on the last track made me want to get up and hug everybody until I got taken away by security and beat up in an alley.

Kyle Hall: The Perfekt Sin

Kyle Hall, Detroit based producer/DJ/label owner is a favorite of ours here at Resin Hits. Hall produces truly funky, original, and inspired house jams that showcase an innate understanding of the genre, and a true love of the music and its cultural roots in Detroit. Not only is he an exceptional producer of house music, but dude totally throws down on the decks as well. I saw him spin last New Year's Eve at the Cass Café with some friends, and it was a most impressive set indeed. After watching him spin, I went over to express my appreciation for his skills, and to see if I could book him to play in Ann Arbor sometime. He handed me a card for his "Wild Oats" record label, I was pretty impressed but never really followed up on contacting him.

What brought Mr. Hall back to my attention was when fellow Resin Hits contributor Korgborglar told me about a set he saw him play and how he was very anxious to try and do some shows with him. Korgborglar then did the world a favor by posting a Kyle Hall track to the Resin Hits for you all to download and enjoy, which I like the millions of you subscribing out there in interweb took full advantage of. It wasn't until about a week later that I was perusing on of my favorite record stores here in Ann Arbor, Encore Records, that I dug through the hundreds of electronic 12"s to find none other than a copy of Wild Oats #2, Kyle Hall's "The Perfekt Sin". Needless to say I snagged this record up without delay and it was well worth the $5 price tag (in fact, a total STEAL if you ask me!)

The jams featured on the 12" really showcase Kyle Hall's range, the first track "The Perfekt Sin" is a total soulful house epic. A throwback to the stylings of Moodyman, Carl Craig, and the more housey offerings from Mr. De'. Track numba 2, "Lovekontrol" sounds like a lost gem from the Dilla archives. While the closer "OatnOut" is a totally off-kilter mindbender that would fit nicely next to jams by Derrick May and Juan Atkins.

My advice to you would be if you ever see anything that this dude is involved with, whether it be a 12" release or a live performance, do not pass it up!

Labryinths and Jokes is the 1998 compilation LP from Hanson Records. The comp features tracks from a slew of Metro Detroit noisers including: Nautical Almanac, Ron of Japan, Isis & Werewolves, The Beast People, The Mini-Systems, and Andrew Wilkes Krier (more famously known as Andrew WK). This music is truly bizarre in the best way possible. I feel like a lot of people forget that there are a lot of freaks here in the mitten, most outsiders looking in on us Michiganders think of us as SUV driving, big game hunting, outdoors enthusiasts who live in a state that has one of the worst cities in the nation; and quite possibly the first world. These assumptions may not be completely off-base, however, there are many interesting folks hiding in-between the expansive pockets of suburban hegemony and urban decay. The music heard here is an apt response to living in a state that is totally fucked economically, culturally depressed, and being ecologically ravaged. The "noise" represented on this Hanson compilation is really an alarm call, that perhaps we should stop ignoring and passively accepting the mountains of bullshit being heaved upon us and perhaps make some positive change. The jamz compiled on this record express all of the disillusion, resentment, and apathy that living in Michigan can induce in those residents with dreams bigger than the Lions making the playoffs.

This past Thursday, Byron, aka Planet Traveler, was at Ann Arbor public access as a guest on some variety show, talking about his concern over the general lack of public awareness about the prevelence and seriousness of stalking, his favorite mixed martial arts moves, and DJing DEMF after parties. A strange take on techno from Kyle Hall's debut on FXHE, EP 1. Swaying perilously from funky to sloppy and back, crunchy Casio-on-cassette drums stumble forward relentlessly, unevenly picking up momentum only to degenerate into rough and unabashed tape edits. The whole thing is steadied by dark polysynth chords in a progression that would sit just as well on an R.D. James mindfuck as it would an early 90's Detroit techno track. The overall effect is all sorts of fucked up, I dare you to beatmatch this track.

The only thing that bummed me out about this 7" was that it was supposed to come with a paper mask as one of the five(!) outrageous inserts, but whoever owned it before me must've been the coolest kid at their teen-beat-themed Halloween on Mars party. Garage Rock Knuckleheads partying down in 1990, with a bunch of goofy tape sound-bytes that culminate in a rad found soundy tape jam. To be perfectly honest I bought this because I couldn't tell if I should be playing it at 45 or 33. If only I had found this before I stopped doing that robotussin binge thing.

According to the back of the sleeve these Boche teenage garage-rockers won some radio station battle of the bands in 1966 (the year of our lord) and got to record two cuts at the Saarlaendischer Rundfunk station. I'm telling you, these cabbage loving hep-katze's bring the groovin' beats, loosey goosey harmonies, chewed up and spit out guitar tone, and that nice rotary club atmosphere only 16-year-olds with matching uniforms can provide. And you gotta love the groovy kraut mama with wicked midriff.

this is a deep jangle satanic lounge rock record that i first heard doing cruise control through texas. didn't take resin hits... we were in texas dood, going incognito. eddy detroit gives off a vintage middle east sunny lounge vibe (sun city girls collab!) but you still get that crushing depressed loner folk mentality. so it's a weird juxtaposition... but then again, so is a resin hit. plus, it's a concept album about satan

Benoit Pioulard - dakota/housecoat

dakota/housecoat is essentially a two track EP released in the summer of 2005 by Benoit Pioulard, a very talented artists who has gone on to release albums with Kranky Records. Pioulard's compositions are intricately woven tapestries of lush, haunting tones with soft distortion and warped cassette loops. This particular album was recorded live to tape using guitar, homemade theremin, and cassettes. The feeling evoked in this music is not dissimilar to awaking from a dream. That hazy, disillusioned feeling that everything in the waking life is a pale reflection upon the inner workings of the subconscious mind. The music is ethereal in nature, mesmeric at times, cacophonous at others, yet the contrasting elements mesh freely and fluidly making the music constantly dynamic and engaging. The album was originally released on cdr with handmade packaging and inserts, and limited to 50 copies. Needless to say, if you aren't in possession of one of these, chances are you never will be. dakota/housecoat is idyllic listening for those who prefer to stay engulfed in haze.

Welcome to Resin Hits. Home to rare, hard to find, out of print, and esoteric records. To kick things off right I'd like to present you with the Wierd Records Compilation II: Analogue Electronic Music 2008. This 4x12" vinyl release from Brooklyn, NY imprint Wierd Records features 39 tracks of exceptional analogue electronic music. The tracks featured on this release run the gamut from Kraftwerk inspired synth-pop to the harshest noise. The artistic roster here is quite diverse, featuring a slew of artists from Detroit, NYC, Florida, Greece, Germany, Russia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc. I found this record at one of my local haunts Encore Records, the perfect electro-goth soundtrack for taking some resin hits.
